Default I broke another u joint!

500 rear wheel horsepower and sticky tires, and what do you get? Another broken u joint. Same u joint as before, between the rear end and drivers side axle. I was rolling this time, not a standing start like last time!
I have to run a 1350/1330 combo u joint because of my 80-82 aluminum rear end with my 79 L-82 axles. Does anyone make a Heavy Duty, solid u joint in this size? And what about a heavy duty 1330 strap? Because chicken and egg, what breaks first, the u joint or the strap? All I can find at Summitt racing are Strange Engineering u joints hollowed out to be grease-able.
https://www.summitracing.com/parts/str-u1648

Any help here would be greatly appreciated!

76strokervette was making some nice ujoint straps a while back.
You might try to PM him to see if he still has some.
Have you contacted Spicer and see what they might have available?

80 and 81 4-speed diffs have 1350 yokes. Changing that isn't easy, but GM did it for a reason.

If you've got $13k laying around, the Ridetech Track 1 setup seems pretty stout, and you get rear coil-overs too!

Probably a better option if you've recently grenaded a diff housing.

At that power level you should be using ujoint caps not straps if your talking about the bolt style one piece straps. Like these or similar.

You broke the inner LH 1/2 joint. What do you have for a diff- an iron or Aluminum Dana? I don't know what L82 axles are, there were "HD" stock axles with caps but if they are 79's they are soft faced. Sometimes the load moves inward and the axle may push the axle bearings inward before the joint shears. It takes some force but u-joints don't just snap. If you wanted to, you can buy solid spicers and cryo them. If you wanted to and have an iron diff you can mod them for 1480 axles- that would be expensive since you would have to rebuild the posi too.

Does it look like this, we took out both inner and outer solid spicer 1350 with a 500hp dead hook and 4-5k manual shift launch

Daaaamn, that’s way nastier than mine. I have an aluminum Dana from an automatic 80-82, with my stock 79 axles, so I need 1330/1350 conversion u joints. Where can I get them solid. I also need 1330 straps or caps.

Once you make the u joints bullet proof, what the next week link in line...your rear end, the driveshaft, the tranny.....? Maybe you should just get less sticky tires if you are not racing, but I dont think you are going to stop at the u joint

I agree. You want the 1350 half shafts.

The stock strap are not the issue. Load is. Those caps pictured most likely have to be fit otherwise the caps could be an issue.

Here's what I don't get- 79 axles are 17 spline, 80-82 DANA Diffs are a finer spline, I don't recall the count but they are not interchangeable. The Eaton spiders are a different size, larger then the DANA. So how is that?

Wait - how is the diff holding up under that HP load? Or did you beef it up?

As other members have said...."Something more costly will have to snap" if you solve the broken U-joint problem.

(How about installing a 2-second relay water-mister over each rear tire )

With 500 RWHP and planted tires U-Joints are the least of your problems. I see a handful of gear teeth in your future.
