Originality revisited
You'll find a few stalwarts here committed to modest originality including stock configurations that can offer advice as you work your 72. In terms of appreciation, 72s are in a different class than late model C3s and therefore enjoying the "appreciation" ride.
If you seek pure discussions of originality try the Corvette Restoration & Preservation List. This group is dedicated to 53-82 Corvette owners dedicated to preservation and restoration. If the discussions here are 80% mod and 20% original, then CRPL is 98% originality and 2% mod. It's a listserv and free of advertising and annoying atars. Some of us hang out there as well so we can keep our blood pure!

When I was confronted with the fact I would need to restore the rusted, dual exhaust system on the 78 with an original configuration, I seriously looked at stainless steel. The look was always clean, it would last forever but the downside was it would be a deduct of originality when judged by NCRS. And the fact of the matter was that people aren't saving exhaust systems and they are not readily available. I guess I procrastinated long enough that I came across an original exhaust system that came off a 78 silver anniversary L-48 and I picked it up for under $500.
Of course my goals for the car was to take it through NCRS flight judging so replacements were in keeping with the original configuration. But when this is not possible, there are some great production that will retain the look, improve on original product and maintain the stock configuration.
