Default Fuel gauge issue

Ok so I’m freshening my dash and getting ready to start putting it back together. I had to replace the resistor on my fuel gauge with a Wilcox 90ohm replacement unit. After doing that and testing the gauges the gauge reads full but will not move no matter what test I do. I have watched the Wilcox video numerous times and have gone step by step. I have checked my input signal wire from the tank to the gauge with my ohm meter and it is good I know it’s not broken. I have power to the gauge and ground to it as the temp gauge works as well as lights. It doesn’t matter if I remove the input wire, ground the input wire, or remove ground no change. I’m apprehensive to believe the gauge is bad because it changed its reading with the new resistor. Thanks

I had this happen to me recently where I connected, and disconnected, and grounded, and did all kinds of crap with the leads while I was underneath. Take a look at this and make sure that you have a good ground lead with no opens. I actually disconnected my battery before doing anything. My gauge was stuck at about 3 o'clock and by starting from scratch with the key off and the battery disconnected I got it go back to normal.

NEVER work on or around the electrical system with the battery still connected!!! Doing so is a recipe for disaster....

Thanks I’ll give that try when time permits. I don’t want to order a new Gauge if I don’t have to especially if I’ll just have the same problem.

yea I don’t do that I always disconnect the battery before making my connections/disconnections.

can you install the gauge then move your float level manually through the gas filler? On my 68 I can almost stick my arm down in there so I bent up a metal wire to manipulate my float while adjusting my aftermarket calibration device. Its actually pretty close on the lower 1/2 of the gauge now

Hope you figure it out

Yea I’ve tried that and don’t get any response from the gauge. The fuel level is pretty low probably about a 1/4.

If you have a gauge that reads FULL all the time, chances are that the signal line is not making good contact between the tank sender and the gauge. Check both at the gauge and at the tank for the problem. It is more likely to be at one of those two locations, rather than with the wire running between them.
