I need a new starter. It appears that AC-Delco only has remans...
`are they any good?
I am looking for a good bolt in starter. `I am concerned about the aftermarket high torque min starters and other “higher quality” starters.
I want something that works and does not require `’fitting, adjusting or funky alignment.....
stock 427 `Holley sniper, tremec TKO, etc.)
Car is a daily driver for me in the summer.
Thanks
thanks

The Power Master starters are GM cores. I have not had to shim the starters on my small block vettes. If need be you can purchase shims for the starter at your local auto store. There is a measurement that should be used to set the clearance. Perhaps someone will chime in. The ultimate guide will be if you hear starter clash. Jerry
What's wrong with the starter? Usually, it's the starter solenoid that fails...but the starter is fine. You have to pull the starter to get at the solenoid; so might as well have the starter checked before you throw money at it.
Most C3 starters installed at vehicle assembly are still running. Many others have had solenoid changes but are still running. Many have replaced the starter and solenoid when there was only a solenoid problem. A few of those starters (like mine) have had contact brushes replaced so the starter would be good for another 50 years. Why re-engineer 'success' ???
I use a gear drive starter on my 1968 C3 and even with the 12.25-1 compression ratio it "Cranks like a Chrysler"! The gear drive units are far superior to the factory starter as they are smaller and don't suffer the Heat Soaking issues. I bought one from Summit racing and it is still there 25 plus years later!
I removed my factory starter and had it rebuilt and stashed it away in a bag. Between the new gear driver starter and pulling timing (20*) while cranking you will get that engine spins right up. If you have the Holley Sniper then you should be able to do this in the software that came with it. I saw it has the provisions for doing it. I have the Holley Stealth Sniper on my 1968 and love that thing. Even if you use a factory starter and pull the timing it should speed up the cranking speed. I pull 20* until I hit 800 rpm and then the timing goes right back.
Hello 7T1vette!
You are right about it being a "well designed" unit and it worked just fine until I built the high compression 427 and then the poor starter was really struggling to crank so I replaced it with the Gear drive which is the better solution for my Corvette. I had my rebuild shop rebuild the starter and they beefed it up a bit and still it cranked too slow. If I had just pulled the timing first it might have been fine.
The alternator that came with my C3 was a bit shy on power so I up-sized it to handle the extra power users I have added like the EFI, electric fans and soon Electric Power Steering will replace the hydraulic system. I now have a 125 amp alternator and have no problems with fans that run after shutdown like I did before.
I like to think that these were "upgrades" to the C3 and nothing is "permanent". All the parts I removed are rebuilt and stored in vacuum bags. I want the next owner to put it back to the way it came if that toots their horn.
We have had the C3 for 30 years as of July 19th, it was my first Corvette and I bought it when everybody was down on 1968 C3 owners.
CVR 5323R.....IMHO, best mini starter on the market. The R suffix is for points....delete if you have electronic. I have install a dozen of these in the last 15 years and they are as good as it gets. Not a single one needed shims, but you will have to "clock" it, about a 5 minute job.

Half the size, 5x more powerful and 1/3 rd the weight (nice when you are on your back holding it up to start that first bolt......8 vs. 25 lbs.)...uses less amps to operate too.
Unless you have a NCRS 100 point car......using the stock starter is ridiculous.
I have one that is close and I am still thinking about getting one
my starter numbers don’t match so I don’t have much to loose.
it just may be worth it.
