I'm retrofitting the suspension (front and rear) from a 1986 C4 into my 1979 C3. Some people keep the C3 track width to run "stock-ish" backspaced wheels, while others go with the C4 track width and run late-model backspaced wheels (ex: C5 Z06 wheels).
It would seem to me that the C4's wider track width would be better from a performance perspective, but is this necessarily true?
Since I have installed a C4 Rear Suspension in my C3 I have to ask just how much work are You willing to do to to alter the Track Width ? Your 86 is about an inch narrower than the late 1988+ C4s. To narrow it means cutting the Batwing, 1/2 Shafts, Sway Bar and Spring. Its been done before but its a big job just to keep period correct wheels on what must be a modified C3 anyway.

I’m not against the extra work, but I’m also not seeing much of a reason to narrow the C4 suspension. I’m okay with late model wheels so the added performance is just that much better. I wanted to ask if I was missing something though.
I would suggest making a temporary Steel ridged Spring when You mock up the suspension. If You don't every time you measure something will of changed. I certainly hope that the Body is off the Frame.
