Default Backdate Center Shift Console

Hi all,

Does anyone know if I can backdate the center console in my 82 to a 76 and earlier? I really don’t like the side carpet pieces. I like how the earlier one is one piece.

Thanks!

This is the earlier version I like:

I dislike the carpet when wearing shorts. Not a complete solution, but you can buy replacement side pieces made from other materials, or do it yourself. Top Flight makes them in leather. I bought a set for my wife's 79, and they are a huge improvement (and crazy expensive).

I think I'll cut my own ABS plastic pieces, and cover them with vinyl, for my 80.

Wow! That’s insanely expensive! Cutting my own might not be a bad idea, but I do like the earlier ones that are one piece.. am wondering if it’ll fit. Are the mounting points the same? I know I’ll probably need to swap the hvac controls…

I doubt the mount points are the same, but the shape of the tunnel underneath should be the same. You could probably make it fit if you had to. The real trick is that the way the later (77-82) center console (the part around the shifter, that holds the HVAC controls) is installed, requires access from the side to do the final connections/screws. Do you have an assembly manual? You might be able to get an idea just by looking at diagrams at Zip Corvette, or searching for photos on this Forum.

The real question here is if the earlier trans console design will FIT between the later model seats. You would have to work out the attachment methods; but the floor and vehicle configuration is basically the same, so that tunnel should mount into an '82 car....if it will fit and not cause interference with the seats.
