Hi, I have a '78 with the L82 motor and noticed the heat riser rod came off and is hanging. Does anyone know where it connects to and if it needs a clip?
Whatever is going on with that, you do NOT want that heat riser valve to remain 'closed'. It can remain 'open' all the time with little negative effect...but never closed, unless the actuator system is working properly.

...which is why people will intentionally disconnect them. Therefore, my warning above about something in the system being broken. The OP better check it out before just hooking it up...
Along the lines of disconnecting them.....when I put the new exhaust on our L71 last week I didn't want to worry about the heat riser having an issue, and I'm not concerned about the benefits of warming up a cold engine because it's only a spring, summer, fall car. I used a cutting wheel on my dremel, and fixed it so I can leave it looking stock and not worry about it. Took about 5 minutes. There's probably a reason I shouldn't do this, but it sure starts and runs great since too..... Best, Paul
