I understand you followed what tech support told you but it doesn't make sense. The module picks up its power from the positive terminal. They state when Not using certain coils of their choice a resistor or resistance wire is required. No matter what the coil can handle it appears the module is Not designed to work without some sort of resistance in its power feed. I have used the Mallory version of the module and only recently experienced a failure after a service life of 30 to 40 years. I have used the factory resistance wire to power it.

I installed the PerTronix Ignitor II electronic module and their Flame Thrower II coil, was a simple install and the engine fired right up and runs good. Only time will tell if it is junk or not.
It's not junk; it just an electrical device which is asked to function properly inside a rotating, vibrating piece of machinery mounted to a 200*F block of metal with controlled explosions going on continuously..... Such environments do not bode well for sensitive electronic devices. I hope yours lasts a long time without problem.
