Default 81 Wires appear at accelerator

1981 that I purchased in June of this year. A couple of mysteries that I have been unable to determine. The hazard lights and horn don't work. I have a service manual which indicates that the horn relay is above the fuse box. Is the fuse box under the dash or in the engine compartment?

Today I noticed two wires hanging down by the accelerator. Not sure what they are for. What is black, the other is black/brown.

Also have a switch mounted under the steering column. If you have any insight into its purpose, let me know.

Lastly, any ideas on what the small red light to the left of the steering column is?

Your fourth image is of the fuse panel. It has ATC fuses, just like a modern car.

I bet your hazard light problem is either a missing flasher unit, or someone put LEDs in the circuit without using a 3-wire flasher (the chime module is in the way, but there should be a second round flasher at the top of the fuse panel).

The horn issue could be related to a failure inside the steering column. I replaced the horn contact in both of my cars (link). Check the fuses before you dive into the column, but I watched a YouTube video to figure out how to fix it.

The toggle switch and red light are not stock, and are likely part of an aftermarket alarm system. You also appear to be missing the manual override vacuum switch to pop the headlights up without turning them on (to replace the bulbs, for example). That should be mounted to the small removable panel under the steering column.

I don't know what the wires are. Is your radio stock? Lots of things could have happened in the past 40 years. Wiring diagrams are available here:

It wasn't clear if you have them, but I'd suggest a 1981 Corvette shop manual and 1981 Corvette assembly manual, not a generic Haynes service manual. And an owners manual. The vendors sell them, and even RockAuto.

Thank you. I'm going to take the driver's seat out so that I can comfortably look under the dash.

But, you need the AIM for your model year and the Chevrolet Service Manual (I think you have that one) to make sense of what you are seeing. Seeing it is one thing; knowing what you are seeing is something else entirely.
You have the right questions and are very willing to investigate. Get all available information to support your 'search' so you can make sense of what has been changed...and why.

I have the AIM, the Service Manual, and a Haynes manual. All have value. I'll do some more research on my own with what all of you have provided.

Thanks so much.

Papawanna has FREE wiring diagrams PER year.

Hint to your problem....see all the garbage that someone has installed in the trim piece below the column....start there!

Hint 2 the connectors don't look that old...they look aftermarket.

Hint 3 You have the prototype of DRIVE BY WIRE....its worth 1 million Simolean's! LOL

Funny but true story about wiring diagrams.
'
So my next door neighbor got a 76 L-82. I contacted Papawanna and got him the 'gift' of a 76 wiring diagram.
I bound it and prepped it for 'newbie consumption'.

I actually read it and traced the wires. (Damn Engineers!)

When tracing such and such wire (PINK)...I'm going from page to page.....in the margins are the wire colors by NAME. Page one=PINK, Page two PINK I get to page three tracing this pink wire...
In the margin are the words (sanitized) P*SSY PINK! (I couldn't make this up!)

Dateline 1975....some faceless guy in the illustration department of Chevy is BORED OUT OF HIS GOURD drawing wiring diagrams by HAND. "Hey! lets have some fun....nobody is going to notice! " ER AH! I DID!

You probably know the Story of the LION KING movie...same thing...nobody is going to notice!

BEWARE THE PINK WIRE!

Cheers, good luck!
