I want to freshen up the ignition system and currently have coil and points original to car. Can i just rockauto buy a HEI distributor for the 1974 and splice a power feed (avoiding any resistance wire) and be back in business? Is my tach mechanical or now going to be fed off the HEI tach output.
I see "big cap" and "small cap" distributors , is there a clearance issue or aesthetic for fitting under the chrome radio spark shield i assume?
Sorry did some research 1974 was last year of mechanical tach drive. I will stick with breakers. I did emissions and came up high on CO so i was going to go through ignition as one remedy.

Good thinking! I doubt that your points system is the cause of your problems. Hei modules these days are junk and will leave you stranded, usually when you least expect it. Maybe check your dwell and points condition and then look for the real cause of your problem. Ebay is usually a good source for new old stock points sets. I run the Standard Motor Parts UC12X Blue Streak coils which may be made in their Mexico plant. Last ones I bought from ebay were USA made.

Ignition system will not cause high CO. Your stock points system, correctly set up, will pass emissions just fine - no different from HEI for emissions if the timing is set the same. Generally, high CO is an air/fuel problem. High HC is a timing problem. Lean it out and the CO will drop.

Thanks guys. the car had been sitting 10 years, i just replaced the oil, gas tank and a leaking radiator and it seemed to run fine enough to try emissions. I'm sure carb adjustment and fresh ignition parts will make a difference. It was idling really low and sometimes stalling at lights. In AZ they do both the dyno and idle checks. But i just researched a loophole - "Historic Vehicle" plates seem to not require emissions and after the $25 buy in its $10 a year.
I have AZ historic vehicle plates on my Corvette and my C10. Purchasing the historic plates won’t make your vehicle exempt from emissions testing unless your car is insured with one of the Classic car insurance companies. AZ also requires you to pay an additional fee to assist in funding the highway patrol. IIRC that fee is $35.
If you have Hagerty just go to one of the private licence offices, They will see or if not tell them you have "collecter car" insurance and no emissions check required. PM me if you are having a problem and I'll walk you thru it. Its very easy

I too am in Phoenix and the emissions test on my 74 is coming up in January. I have 'Classic Car' insurance through State Farm and would like to go the historic plate route to avoid the yearly emissions. Do you know if it's treated any differently by the MVD if I don't have one of the specific "collector car" insurance companies (Hagerty, Grundy, etc)?

As long as you have collector car ins from anybody your'e good. The dmv or emissions place should tell you that, but I guess they leave it up to you. If your collector ins is tied in to your regular ins that may be the problem. Get something in writing from the Ins co or have them issue a seperate policy. I go to a private licence dealer, not the DMV. They will understand or treat you better and its only $5 more. BTW you dont have to buy the "Historic Car" plates. You can buy any personal one you like or just opt for the standard one. I had collector car ins on my C7 and didnt need emmisions. Get the longest year tags you can, I think mine are good for 5 years. Not lot of money for my 72.

YES. I did my MVD appointment today to get 4 cars updated.
If you want the classic car plate that is $25 a year extra.
If you lapsed on registration like me, at the MVD they do waive any penalties. They give u a form to sign that says you were not driving the car.
So for one car, a 5 year no inspection registration/tag in AZ if you have classic car insurance (and you keep your current plate) was $57.50. (on average - they prorated to match month of whatever the plate was)
My titles were AZ but old and she said she needed to "re title" the cars, and when they do that at the MVD you can request paper title at that time (it will come in the mail) for no fee. She said MVD titles are al electronic now - but how do you feel ok with that if they erased the paper ones you have in hand?
