I dont see anyone mentioning the fact that if your car is tuned too rich, it will smell of gas. This is because there is fuel in the exhaust system still. Pretty common if your carb is not tuned correctly.

THe 68 has a vented gas cap. No charcoal canister. THe smell is normal from what you are seeing. If the car is tuned rich it will smell gassy and very lean and it burns your eyes. The hose is a PCV copnnection, it is the fresh air going into the valve cover.
