Default Tachometer and Instrument Cluster Problems

I have a 1977 corvette that is having some problems with the gauges. The water temp and oil temp both work along with fuel but my clock and my volt meter don’t work. Also my tachometer doesn’t work but that’s not really a big deal since I can just listen to the engine to know when to shift, I’d still like it to work though. Any possible solutions?

These are most likely separate problems.

Tach is electronic and then boards are known to go bad. Check Willcox; he makes a board that’s an upgrade from the original. I put one in mine and am happy with it.

Clock is mechanical and the points inside get burned after years of use and stop working. If you’re handy you might be able to take it apart and repair it. Otherwise there are quartz replacements that are more reliable and look like original.

Volt meter is more problematic. You would need to provide more info. Could be a wiring problem inside the car, or bubba may have replaced the alternator and just “forgot” to hook up the brown wire that feeds the gauge.

No matter what, sounds like you are going to be disassembling some/all of the dash. Not a fun job.

Good luck, hope this helps.

I had the same problem with my 82. It turned out to be the gauge fuse.
