Hi. I am Fumi. Japanese man. I am sorry to can't speak and write an English well.
Now I am fixing my friend's 1971 C3. It has problem. Starter won't stop.
It always remove the cable from battery.
I already changed ignition s/w, key cylinder and starter solenoid.
But turn the key and back to the OFF position, starter still running.
I saw the 1971 C3's wiring diagram and check the horn relay.
Maybe relay is original.
And checkd wiring. 5 wiring comes to fix to relay by two screws.
3 wiring comes 12V.
1 wiring comes 0.6V, rest of wiring doesn't come voltage.
Is it fault or not?
Does relay conrol the starter when turn the key?
Please help and give me any idea.
Thank you.
Fumi...dispite what you wrote...Indicators point to the 'BENDIX SOLENOID' in the starter itself....this is the metal can protruding from the starter.
Remove starter. Clamp it to the tabletop
Take battery and put it next to it.
Follow wiring diagram to connect main positive cable.
Follow wiring diagram to connect main negative cable
Briefly energize solenoid terminal...
Does the starter 'start' =YES
Does the starter go off when you remove the solenoid wire? NO= Bendix solenoid STUCK ON= bad rebuild!
Hi, I have a few questions. Does it start cranking as soon as you connect the battery or it's after you initiate cranking with the key? Is this a automatic or manual transmission car?
There's no relays involve for the cranking circuit.
possible the R terminal wire is also on S terminal providing spark voltage to cranking connection. also time to consider getting rid of the old style starter. which wires, which colors large or small hole in terminal give what voltage? the large hole wire or wires go on large terminal. EXCEPT FOR BLACK GROUND! the 2 small terminal wires. the purple wire goes ion S the yellow wire, if used, goes on R.

Had that problem a while back with a replacement starter. Aftermarket nose cone was the issue. I bought a permanent magnet gear reduction stater with 2 new bolts and never had a problem after that.

I had that issue when I ran a new distributor and coil. THe coil needs power during crank and during run. IF the wire going to the coil doesnt have a diode or the diode is bad it will allow the starter to run continuously
Thank you for your reply.
I forgot to write some specification.
Always I initiate cranking with the key, starter won't stop the cranking.
But sometimes, when I connect the battery, it starts to cranking.
Google translate says that = Thank you for your reply.
And I decided to write some concrete things.
This car is an automatic transmission. The engine is 350 cu.in.
I have already changed my regular distributor to a HEI type distributor.
Hi, 4-vettes. Yes, I think so too.
But my friend spent over $4,000 and he will spend lots of money.
Because get the inspection in Japan, has to pay tax and insurance.
So if any parts can be fix, I fix them.
Any parts fault, I change the new one.
But after the inspection, we do update his corvette.
When was the HEI installed relating to this starter issue?
Hi, Rescue Rogers.
When I was checked all spark plugs, those didn't spark.
I checked a distributor and ignition coil. There were fault. So I changed them.
But starter's problem is before I changed to HEI.
And next I changed starter solenoid and ignition s/w, key cylinder.
But problem was not improved.
unhook the small wire or wires off the solenoid. the ones on the 3 or 4 mm terminals hook a wire to the S terminal. long wire. bring the other end up into passenger compartment. touch end of wire to positive battery terminal. in neutral or park with wheels blocked. engine should start or at least crank and stop cranking when wire removed. if it continues cranking the problem is with the syarter itself. if it starts and stops correctly, the problem is with the switch or wiring that fires the starter. only wire on S terminal should be yellow. with HEI, the purple wire is not needed. do not connect it. tape off the bare end.

What color is the wire supplying power to the HEI. Maybe the previous wired it incorrectly. After you do dereks check, let us know how the HEI is wired. Post pictures if you can
