Distributor cross gear tool ?
I’m about to swap out the distributor cross gear assembly for my tach drive.
Went out today to see what I could get in a screwdriver with a thin blade that is about 3/4” wide and no luck so far. Looking like I have to fabricate my own tool to remove the old assembly and install the new.
What have you guys come up with for this ?

Lars
I procured a GM distributor to use in the car. It needed rebuilding as the main shaft tach drive gear was stripped (as was the cross gear).
Have access to a vertical mill and a lathe so I machined out the thrust wear area inside the distributor housing then fashioned a mild steel
wear button and all was good. (I thought)
I ordered the parts to repair the distributor including the cross gear. My tach cable has square ends and both ends measure .100 thousanths
and the end at the tachometer inside the car fits fine.Problem is the square hole in the cross gear measures .125 thousanths and the cables square end just spins inside the cross gear. ie won't work.
Can someone assist? Thanks.

so last weekend at a cars and coffee I was speaking with a fellow who
had a ‘68 427 car too and had the same tach issue. He said he changed the cross gear, it wasn’t hard and it fixed the issue. Great ! This was what I needed to hear to get motivated to do mine.
I needed that 3/4” wide tool to fit the end of the assembly. I cut a butter knife (don’t tell my wife
) used a wrench on it and it worked perfectly.
Comparing old and new I really couldn’t see and obvious reason why the old gear didn’t work….
but as they say the proofs in the puddin
