I know what fits under a stock 72 BB hood. It is the GM 3963569 LS6 intake and almost nothing else. And you still have to use a GM style "large drop base" air filter and that gives you about 1/2" of hood clearance. The Torquer II single plane fits as well. Now on a 73 you do have a little more hood height from the hood bulge. I do not know how much more, maybe an inch? If it is that may be enough for a Performer to fit. Maybe? That one is probably 20HP stronger at 6000 if you can use it. My engine expert says there is probably no difference below 5500.
Uh yeah it is pretty "flat"
There is very little room between the bottom of the air cleaner and the top of the valve covers.
Before you go far be sure to get a good drop base for the air filter as that can make a big difference. Several places offer the L88 style drop base which offers a lot of room and works very nicely on a Holley carburetor.
