I continue on the path of restoring my 68 Convertible. It does not have AC. I am at the point of reinstalling the console and heater controls. The vent cables attach to the upper forward side of the console and to the vent levers. I have lost a great deal of skin trying to get this all in.
Once I have it all attached to the control mounting plate. I cannot get under the console to attach the vent cables. To add insult, the control mounting plate (with the vent levers) does not want to go thru the console itself when everything is installed (not including the vent cables), so it must go together as a unit?
I hope this makes sense. Is there a sequence of events for this part of the project that make it doable. I have restored many Corvettes (all AC) , Camaros and Chevelle and never encountered this difficult of a problem.
Thank you,
Leo
I just reinstalled the shift console on my 70. This time I disconnected the cables at the vents so I could attach the cables to my console while it was out of the car. Installed the console with cables already attached. That part worked out well. Getting the nuts on the studs of the center gauge cluster was a bit of a pain.

Great idea. I hate to take that all apart again, but it looks like the only way.
Thank you,

My 73 convertible center gauge cluster and console is similar to your 70 car. It has been my experience that the center gauge cluster should be loosely installed along with the bottom section of the console. There is a u snapped bracket that connects to the threaded shafts coming down from the radio. You can leave the nuts on the screws and tighten them once the center gauge is installed along with the bottom portion of the console. I have always had the passenger map pocket out of the car along with the kick panel. Rember theses cars are old, with old plastic an old vinyl attached to cardboard, so be Gentle.
Thank you. Yes, I had stripped everything out of the interior and had to actually rebuild the vent doors themselves. I guess I will get to see them again.
I appreciate your help.

may I suggest wing nuts for the center console and put a stud on the back of the hand brake console instead of fishing for the hole with the bolt thru the bulk head
