Or do it the hard way put a GV on that T400..will never break thats for sure

Get one from a reputable builder not an unknown place off Ebay amazon etc with a cheap price
The warranty isnt worth the paper the fine print is written on.
Check any local trans shops, they like machine shops usually gottons of cores they are sitting on and may have one ready to go.
I was just talking to a guy on monday at a car show that said he blew the GV on his c3... said the gears in it reminded him of an old fashioned pencil shrpener...

Golfer dad.... how many HP are you planning for the car? if you do get a 2004r id look for an 87+ model from a GN or a monte carlo SS... both transmissions are rated for 300hp but the 700r4 is rated fro 75more lbs of torque depending on the year of transmission your comparing.

Well it was bone stock a few months ago 1981,I think 190HP,and I have replaced the heads with E street heads,Edelbrock carburetor and headers, and Edelbrock intake,so,less than 300hp.and new HEI distributor, and still waiting to fire it up.

no cam? Could be wrong but my guess is likely around 260 rwhp.. unless your looking do redo everything you just did for much more power either trans in its stock configuration should be fine IMO although you likely will be pushing the edge due to the amount of torque high engine produces being on the high end for the trans... This is were your driving habits would matter.

That’s probably about right, but definitely less than 300 hp,and I just bought it to cruise on Friday nights and enter some car shows.although I do like a good take off smokin the tires.but, also like the fact that the 200r4 weights in about 55-60 lbs less than 700r4.which considering I’m putting it in by myself.but, a previous owner did put duals and mufflers years ago,so it appears,if I go with the 700,I would have to cut or even change the pipes, but with the 200,because it’s the same length has my th350,wouldn’t have to change anything with the pipes. I bought the car in March,it had a diary in glove box, that had most of work done to car,he replaced cam, lifters, timing chain, water pump in 1999,and since then the car has about 5k miles,so,not even broke in yet.but not sure what cam,and might even be stock, but it did sound like it had a lope to it,but not much.so,not sure, and didn’t see pulling engine out tearing it up,although can’t believe I did what Indid to begin with, the car ran and purred like a kitten, but I want it to sound like a lion,lol....

I've always heard that the 200-4R can be stronger than a 700.. although those discussions were always comparing built versions of them, rather than stock.

I'm looking at a similar solution for my wife's 79.

Silver Sport Transmissions sells kits based around the 4L60e, just for C3s.

https://shiftsst.com/blog/post/1968-...ctfit-kit.html

(They also sell 5 and 6 speed manual kits...)

Well, the salvage yard finally called this Mourning and said they have my th200-4R transmission, and I’m assuming that they had it stored somewhere inside, looked to be in good shape, and he said that was his last one,and if I got these numbers and letters right,I think it came out of a 1985 Oldsmobile with a 307 in it,was hoping to find one a little later, but the way it looks I’m satisfied, and wished I could know the miles on it.but no way of knowing that, but from what I can see.pretty clean.will take some pictures.

And I have been watching a lot of you tube,on both of these tyranny’s,and some of the parts are interchangeable on the 700r4,and the 4L60e,such as the sun shell, and the band,as I don’t need or plan on having a 400 HP car, just a better than stock upgrade, although I’m curious what this looks like on the inside, time will tell, might be slap new seals in it and ride.

On ETSY.com, find the ATSG GM overhaul manual for 200 4R. You’re gonna need it if you try to break open this trans. There are also some speciality tools you’ll need. Try Sonnax.com for tools and updated parts.

If you’re changing converter seal and rear/yoke seal, then they are almost normal. BITD, Loctite red was used on the perimeter of the front seal. And there was also a “cage” locking ring to put around the seal. Please note that the output wobbles around like crazy because it’s supported different than other Turbo Hydros.

I emailed Art Carr about upgrading the pump. They are vane pumps that are crude in the original form. They can add more vanes and make your pump better.

Actually looks really good, pulled the pan off an still looks as if its new,and you can tell it was stored inside somewhere, so,might have got lucky wkth a good 200-4r.

Seems to have come out of 1985 oldsmobile cruiser, not sure what that is,maybe a wagon or luxury car,bot came with a 307 engine.

Did ( overhauled) one of those, big Olds, 307 Chevy or corporate motors possible. All it really needed was the green nitrile o-ring that seals the lock up converter on the input shaft. Won’t stay locked up, in and out. Find a Superior Transmission Shift Correction Kit, works nice. Kills the Stack Shift problem these trans had. They have a high performance kit, but may be radical. 2000 to 2200 converter would be very streetable. Easy and breezy cruise machine….Buy the servo stuff if you plan on leaning on it. 2.95:1 low and 70% overdrive, perfect! Set TV with pressure gauge. Get the adapter for carb/ TV connection. A fresh filter and a can of Lubegard red. Keep us informed…..
