What kind of distributor are you using? If hei it could be the ignition control module. Use your old coil if still good and disconnect your "box". Nothing wrong with using your old points distributor if you still have it. Standard Motor Products still has quality ignition parts if you decide to get rid of your hei set up. Do you really need the "box"??
I would just buy a generic gm coil and hook it up to see if it works. And then you'd have a spare.

If you have an 6A box its pretty simple to test the coil. Connect the coil to the coil wires on the box, get power and grounds to the box, hook a spark plug wire or similar to the coil output, and then short the two magnet pickup wires together. By shorting those out the box will trigger and fire off the coil.
