Default Rag Joint

Help, I replaced the rag joint on my 1972 vette.
Instructions were to disconnect all rag joint bolts, loosen all bolts holding steering wheel/shaft in place, push/pull steering shaft back into driver compartment enough to remove joint.
I have pushed back shaft about a 1/2 inch. installed new rag joint but I am having difficult getting shaft back the 1/2 inch I moved it.
I have tried pulling and even slightly tapping with a hammer against the steering shaft coupling trying to move it.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to move this shaft down towards coupling the 1/2 inch I need.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
