Default 1979 L82 what sensor is this?

I have a new to 1979 with a L82, automatic, Edelbrock intake and carburetor with an electric choke. I was checking the wiring to the electric choke and there was no power with engine running. Tracing the wire back it goes to what looks like a temperature sensor located just underneath and towards the drivers side of the distributor. It has two connections, one has power and the other (going to electric choke) has no power. I will try to attach a picture of the sensor.

the question is should the electric choke be wired this way or to a constant 12v with engine running?

thanks

That looks to be an oil pressure sensor. The choke should be wired to an ignition source. It should have power while cranking and when the engine is running. I think in 79 though the oil pressure sensor is located down by your oil filter. That 90 degree fitting is not factory nor does it look like the sensor is factory. The wire terminals are not factory wiring either.

I have one on my 78, it is an aftermarket oil pressure switch. In this way you can work on the engine with the key on, not running, and no current going to the choke. I since just ran the electric choke wire to the wiper motor wire to eliminate this switch.

The person doing your electric choke conversion wired the choke through an oil pressure switch so the choke will only see power when the engine is running. It's a good idea. If there is no power to the choke when the engine is running, but there is power going to the pressure switch, then the switch has gone bad.

thanks for the info I’ll do some more checking and verify if the switch is good or bad.
