I have a friend who has a 76 with a crate engine and he is having major problems with his power steering pump.
It appears that the control valve was leaking and ran the pump out of fluid causing the power steering to go out. This apparently caused the pump to lock up and bounce around while he was driving. The problem is that when he went to replace the pump the pully was hitting on the frame and was very difficult to install. Question is, is the 74 and earlier model pumps smaller? This car has had many changes in the past.
. Thanks
65 - 74 pump 75 - 79 pump
What does the pump look like? Is the pulley cast iron or stamped steel? Does the p/s pump pulley line up with the crank and w/p pulley?
you would have to physically compare them to determine if it solves the issue and can be used without modification.
WOW!!!!!!!!! That is EXACTLY what I am asking, if anyone knows the size difference. I don't happen to have a pump sitting around and was hoping someone knew!!! Thats why I asked forum members!
If anything is hitting I would bet it's the pulley. Both have the same size pulley, early is keyed. Late is press fit.
Answer here I believe is a shorter belt. Or, did brackets get bent when the old pump seized and bounced around?

Thanks for the reply, kinda was what I needed to hear. Ill bet it will take a shorter belt. Hopefully the brackets are not bent. Will see.
Thanks again
