Default Stub axle tips

I saw Lars posted about stub axle tip wear modifications.

If anyone has done this mod, I have a full machine shop with a Rockwell hardness tester, what material did you used for the tips.

I'll check my records to see what I used - it may have been A2, but I'm thinking it was 4140 heat treated to the noted Rc.

It was 4140 with post-machine heat treat to Rc48. Anything in the 48-to-mid-50 range will be hard enough to resist the wear while still maintaining some toughness to avoid brittleness. Good luck with the project - these "buttons" work very well.

Grab some of your buddys ''new'' cams and lifters.
Test hardness on specialty the lifters for us.

Test an old cam too for comparison.
You will do great service to our hobby with the results.............

No problem.

I have the cam and lifters from a Trick Flow kit TFS-K314-420-395. Not sure how old of a cam you're looking for.

Likely the older then newer the better.
Want to see what changed between todays cam lobes/lifters and yesteryear's we had no trouble breaking in.

Have to buy a new cam set . Really don't want the expense of a roller,
may have no choice.

Don't know enough if they were rated on the rockwell scale.
Bet somebody knows.

Ain't it cool the forum has members with expertise available and never thought we'd need?.................

keep looking up and smiling.

This post has shifted completely from the topic of repairing axles to a discussion of cams. Please start a new post.

I’m sure there are other members that would buy “button” pairs off of you if you made extras…I know I would.
I’ve got a set of stub axles that are just warn enough to make them useless the way they are. These would rejuvenate a good set.

Cheers,
Richard

You still need to be able to machine the hole into the end of the axle and face the length down to the right size. If you can do that you should be able to make up the buttons as well.

I have access to some basic machining tools, enough to machine the axles and machine out the hole but I don’t have access to a hardening tester of that magnitude.
My thoughts are if @Jayson77 is going through the process of making these up, along with the trials and tribulations of the hardening and testing a few to get the perfect hardeness, I’d take a couple.
That would save me some time and effort.

I practically have given up on rebuilt or new axles
I have a bin of axles that I will machine tips for to get them ready to fit to tuned posi’s
The axle wear and final posi tune will determine the size of the tip what works best in one won’t fit another posi

For folks that are interested, my car is currently off to the paint shop and won't be back for a few months.

I plan on testing the differential pin for its hardness before selecting the material for the button. I'll post hardness as soon I get them.

I'll also do the cam and lifter hardness this week.

Would it be possible to make a outer stub axle seal that has a thrust face on it and put a thrust washer there so that the thrust is not taken up in the middle of the pumpkin?
