Quadrajet question
Lars,
I have ordered a accelerator pump return spring and an inlet fitting. The accelerator pump return spring I order looks much smaller than what is in there now, so you are probably correct on that. Note the bend in the accelerator pump rod. That is a new accelerator pump rod and plunger assembly that came with the rebuild kit. I will get back to it when the parts arrive. Todays project is the passenger side window mechanism. I have it apart and in the solvent tank.

I can't see the entire carb number, but it starts with 170572XX. It looks like a re-stamp, and the 170572XX number is not a 1971 BB carb. The 4MV carbs with 170572XX numbers are 1977 heavy duty truck carbs. Someone has swapped a big block throttle lever & shaft into it, so it's what we call a "mix-n-match" carb with various parts and pieces from various different years, none of which are compatible with each other. 1971 Vette 454 carbs are either 7041204 or 7041205.
This is a real '71 454 carb built Monday December 7th 1970:
Notice the height of the accel pump shaft and the angle of the accel pump lever and rod compared to yours:
It also appears that your carb has a 1972-74 choke pulloff and choke linkage, which is completely different from the '71.

I sent you the following info in an e-mail, but I'm going to post it here as well, as some readers may find the info helpful:
Finding and buying a "correct" '71 454 Vette carb will not be a shopping trip - it will be a quest. The majority of the "71 454" carbs being advertised and sold (for a lot of money) are fakes, so be very careful about what you look at. It will likely take a while to find a suitable, unmolested, rebuildable carb that is a "real" '71 454. In the meantime, I would suggest you start a parallel search for a '71 Chevy small block carb in unmolested condition. They made roughly 2 million of them, and you can find good examples in rebuildable condition at very fair prices (some sellers jack the price when they realize that the '71 Nova carb they are selling was also used on Corvettes, but don't fall for the "valuable & rare" jargon). The small block carbs can be set up to run well on your big block with a few little tweaks and mods, and they are visually identical to the big block, less the throttle lever (which can be modified to match the BB appearance). A small block carb like this will certainly run better than the hack-job you have, and you can do this at an affordable cost while you continue the quest for the "real" carb. The '71 carb configuration is somewhat unique due to its choke linkage and the vacuum port configurations, so you need to limit yourself to a search for 1971 only if you want the carb to appear "correct."
