Thanks. I’m not sure what their purpose is.

Seems to me like it's the 2 brackets shown below circled in red. You have to weld them onto the crossmember....but really; why did you buy them?

the trans mount #5 bolts to crossmember with 2 bolts at the back of it. this is a conversion mount to move trans mount forward. if those were the only bolts it would be flapping in the breeze. that is a stiffener that bolt 7 goes through to nut 4 at the side of the mount for more support. save image and blow it up and it is easier to see. where do you weld it? start by bolting mount plate to crossmember and bolting the stiffeners to the mount and see where they line up on the crossmember. but before welding, dry fit the mount and crossmember to the new trans bolted to the engine on the mounts. grinding welds and moving them cuz you missed sucks!!. maybe drill the plate and tap a thread in the crossmember and bolt them to the crossmember. once you are sure of the fit, weld them down and pull the bolts and weld in the bolt hole for a bit more strength.

The two “ small-brackets” shown in the original post PLUS the #5 bracket shown in “carriljc’s post (5)”
Were fist used in 1977 when the Tubbo-400 Transmission was eliminated & the Turbo-350 was fit to the existing C3 frame design.
These parts are also necessary for a TKO - TKX 5-Speed Conversion.

Those 2 little weld-on brackets exist on my 68 for the Muncie M-21 and that same looking numbered 5. I have a picture somewhere of my recently modified (more like mutilated) crossmember -- which I modified for the 200-4R.
I'll go search for the pics.

Here are a couple of pictures of the welded-on brackets. That's after modifying to re-route exhaust for 200-4R.

Ignore the notch between the brackets--- it's only there so I can access the aftermost tranny pan bolt on the 200-4R..... I've got a new piece of 1/8" thick x 4 feet-long boxed steel to redo this monstrosity....it's plenty strong but really looks like sh*t.

They were welded to the transmission crossmember for cars with manual transmissions at the factory. I believe it was from 68 or 69 forward. I added them to my ‘72 as I am changing from a T400 to a 4 spd.

Thanks to all. This helps a ton. I am changing from 400 to 4 speed. I can see where to weld them now.

I assume the bracket between trans and trans mount would not be used on a side mount exhaust car.

Correct. There is a spacer that goes there.
