Jim is correct - the old RG non OD 5-sp transmission will fit nicely however there are some minor mods required to make it fit. The transmission mounting bracket will need to be slightly modified, and if you're running the factory cross member - that may have to be notched to clear the shifter linkage. You'll definitely need to notch it if it's a Long shifter; you may be able to get away w/o notching it w/ a Hurst shifter.
Oh, one other piece of advice...be wary of letting Jim drive your car w/ that transmission...ask me how I know...
Put a polyuerathane front pinion snubber on it if you plan on driving it hard.
You do not want axle hop at your HP level.
Interpon has a video which shows how much a rubber pinion snubber moves, with a stock L82.

I've got a buddy selling a real nice Richmond 5 speed that came out of a Vette. They are NON-O/D....so 5th is 1 to 1. You stick with stock 3.08/3.36 or whatever rear gears. They have a real steep 1st gear (3.29) and 4th is underdrive..so it's like having 4.10's in 4th...and then click to 5th and cruise. They fit in same spot as a Muncie. His has the shifter and output yoke you'll need to bolt it all in.
I ran one in my car for years with a 427 and for a good while with the 540 and loved it.
Let me know if interested and I'll put you in touch. It's located just an hour or so south of Dallas.
JIM
Thanks for the offer Jim, but I want to keep the original transmission in there. This isn't a terribly rare car, but I want to keep it together.
I was wondering what you were doing to get 450 hp out of a L46?
As I built up my L82 parts started failing. Never a big deal. I was always able to limp mode home with bad noises coming out of the differential or a failed half shafts ujoint. You do need to inspect the stub axles end play and outer axles. Like above posted the Spicer ujoints. You also need the small weaker half shafts updated to larger diameter
It's very expensive to just shotgun everything and not needed till things fail. Ive upgraded Muncie trannies with Italian bigger shafts and gear set. But ultimately you need versions with stronger cases.
It's very doubtful that you can create that same dyno graph on a home build. With 350 ish ci it would require higher compression and heads with the flow numbers of AFR 180 or even 195 heads, perfectly dialed in cam of solid tappet or hot H-Roller, matching intake, good headers.
You need to remember that the original C-5 ZO6's were only 405 HP and a 7000 rpm red line.

Even though I will be assembling the motor, it's not entirely a "home build". Mark (VortecPro) is about 4 hrs south of me. I'm taking the heads, block and crank to him. He's going to port the heads and work the crank and block the same way he did with the build in that post, I'll probably end up using the same cam even though he thought he could get more with a different one. I don't really want more because of the driveline upgrades I'd have to do to handle it.

Besides, 450hp is plenty for me
Okay! I just didn't know exactly what you were doing and that you need heads flowing 260 CFM and quite a big cam. I hot rodded a 355 with a single plane, C/R, heads. and cam. I had a th350 and the first time driving it the heads lights barely came up as you were driving it from little vacuum and I had to up the stall to 3000 with a 9.5 inch TC. It was actually fun. 3.55 rear and consistent 12.08 with slicks

If they tell you that, did you ask them thfor the time slip at the track...ET and top speed...I ususally do because most nancys with the big numbers never go...my best speed was 108mph but I couldnt keep the tires from spinning and would sit at 13 seconds....
