Default Temperature gauge

I have a 1981, and I have replaced everything on the top end, everything Edelbrock including E street heads, well after doing all that cranked it up,also has long tube headers, dual exhaust, decided to have a shop to replace cam,and all new bearings and oil pump, new harmonic balancer, new fuel pump, well,Now,my gauges aren’t working,I know my fuel gauge was working, and battery charging, but now nothing, temp gauge not working either,I do remember some ground wires that were hooked up,not sure if that’s my problem, and the shop didn’t hook it back up,thanks.

On most of the C3 cars there is only one wire going to the temp sensor, the base of the temperature sending unit gets it’s ground from the engine. If you don’t see the engine has any ground wires, that is your problem. Take it back to the shop, they are not very thorough with their work.

Did you check for a blown fuse?
why didn't you go back to the shop?

Yea,after seeing what they have done, what I visually see anyway, wrong blot In alternator adjusting guide, stripped the threads on it,had a starter bolt in the wrong hole on my AC compressor, broke the bracket on the dip stick tubing that bolts to the block, not to mention on my radiator support, not sure why,but he removed my original bolts, and just put all different color and length bolts back in it.so,not taking it back to them, but they probably have a ground wire off some where.

No,have not checked it,but the gauges were working when I took it to him,so,other than pull engine and put cam in it,and reinstall,he didn’t do anything to blow a fuse, unless he didn’t disconnect battery, which would be the very first thing you would do.but, who knows,I will track it down.

Not surprising since a lot of mechanics are not really collector, vintage, restorer guys. That's why I hesitate to take my car anywhere - they just don't get it and you must say and repeatedly repeat what you want and don't want. I had my '72's original auto-trans rebuilt a couple summers ago and didn't even think that the solvents would dissolve the side ID plate's paint. Now it's just an aluminum plate with stamped letters & numbers. I did have the foresight to tell them not to change out anything on the exterior (i.e. modulator) without asking first and definitely not to paint the entire trans black like they normally do.

I don't know specifically what an '81 has for electricals vs. my '72, so take this as just a SWAG:
Are all the wires hooked up at the horn relay? (On a '72 a bunch of important components are connected there and run through it.)

Did you know that the fuse for the gauges also power the EGR solenoid and possibly some other stuff under the hood.

When you say none are working are you also meaning Tach? or Just center console? If it is just center console, it might be possible plug harness behind center cluster not making good contact. Just redid my gauges on my 80 to a more modern look.

Still waiting on two sending units. Water and Oil senders.
