I took delivery of my 1970 Stingray with the original 350 ci this weekend. Love it, but it needs some TLC. First set of issues may be related, but not sure. First, engine idles at 1500 rpm all the time, no longer how long it has been running. Second, the radiator fan runs constantly as well. Third, the coolant temp gauge doesn't work and sits at 100. Are these related? Will fixing one resolve the others? Or are they separate issues?
Not a one fix. Lars unfavorable reman. carb. I had a reman would not idle below 1000. Thermostatic fan, you wont see it stop turning. My temp gauge reads zero when disconnected. Has ganky connector that comes loose and reads zero.

The fact that you have electric fans installed means that someone has done some modifications to your engine, and it is not stock. The fact that the fans run all the time means that the modification was poorly or incorrctly done, which then leads to the question, "what else have they modified and performed incorrectly on your engine?" Did they change the intake manifold? Has the exhaust crossover been blocked? Do you even have the original carb on the engine or is it an aftermarket non-stock carb? High idle speed is indicative of either a vacuum leak or the throttles not fully closing. Not knowing what carb you have makes it impossible to make good suggestions - shoot some photos of your engine compartment so I can see what the configuration is.

The fan is not electric and it spins by hand when the engine is off. I may be overestimating the continuous operation, but I have yet to see or hear it not run.
Went for two-hour cruise today. Intermittently, the idle settled down to 1000 rpm, but returned to 1500 by the time I got home. Still not sure why.

A de-clutching stock fan will always be turning when the engine is running. That's the way it works. Even when de-clutched, it still spins.. The stock mechanical fan never stops spinning if the engine is running. Yes, you can spin it by hand when the engine is not running. Your fan is operating normally.
Sounds like 3 separate issues to me.
Most importantly is a owner that has absolutely no clue what he has and most likely never owned a car built before electric fans became a standard item.
idles high? Have you even tried adjusting the idle speed?
Temp gauge not working?
Sending unit connected? Any checking or troubleshooting done at all?
mechanical clutch fan that always spins????
Is this what you have?
Stock clutch fan? If so, Lars is spot on. It's supposed to work this way.
Please post up photos of your engine, and carburetor with airfilter removed from both sides.
Once we can see what you have, we can help.

Doc - I stated and requested the same thing yesterday. He hasn't provided any info about what carb he has or anything about how it's hooked up. Without seeing his setup it's not possible for anyone to make any intelligent suggestions about his problems, other than that he doesn't have a fan problem.

Three most important things in CF diagnosis help/opinions is... photos, photos, and photos. Remember, lots of eyes and experienced C3 owners will be looking.
Beautiful '70 Convertible!

Info and pics will greatly help members like Lars and others help. High idle most likely one or more of vacuum leaks, choke stuck, too much initial timing, etc.
These cars have many vacuum lines. A good starting point is to plug off vacuum lines to carb, make sure choke is not hanging up, back idle screw off, do you have a stock throttle control switch holding idle speed up, check timing is not over advanced, verify idle speed with vacuum advance hooked up and disconnected.
Do you have stock charcoal cannister hooked up? PCV valve vacuum leak to cannister can effect idle also.
Fear not, step by step and forum help will pinpoint the problem.
Ok, it's been 2 days, he must have fixed his problems and forgot to tell us.........Not! Something must have happened.... If you are still out there, one thing you might do is get a digital thermal temp sensor so that you can see what the temp actually is when it is warmed up, just to make sure it's not getting too hot.
