I recently purchased the Doug Throley Headers D334 and the Pypes SCC10V to install on my C3.
When I openned the box to start my install I saw there was a bent on boths sides of the X-Pipe.
I sent an email to Pypes directly but havent gotten an answer yet so I completed my install anyway.
I assume it is for the clearance but by looking at it it looks like it will restrain the air flow.
What are you tought on the subject? Have you purchased the same kit and received the bent pipes?
I have been lurking on the forum for years but it is my first post.
That is what I was thinking, it look machine bent in their factory. My only explanation would be to clear the handbrake cable which pass near this area.
Send it back. There's nothing immediately behind the crossmember on a pre-cat C3 that requires the flats on the X pipe.
That and X pipes sound raspy. Find a system with an H pipe behind the crossmember. It will annoy your neighbors a lot less and will still run better than straight exhaust pipes.
One of the reviewers had this to say "The X Pipe has HUGE notches taken out of it on either side that literally reduce the effective size of the pipe in half. This is not reflected in any of the advertising photos. Per Pypes, the notches are for parking brake cable clearance, however they are nowhere near the location of the parking brake cables."
FWIW, Engine masters did a test on denting the header and what difference it made on the dyno but I don't know about the pipe being half the size.
I could not get Pypes to fit my 77......but actually NONE of the exhaust systems I bought would fit....even the $2000 StainlessWorks system did not fit. It required special custom bends that I had to pay for, AFTER giving them $2000. I also had tried American Racing Headers......and THEY did not fit either....sent them back. They all make the same nonsense excuses about CHevy's build tolerances.....but when a pipe is TWO INCHES from where it needs to be.....I call BS on all of that. My frame was undamaged, and measured out perfectly square on the restoration.....so NONE of these exhaust manufacturers have got it right for me yet. Its one reason I am sticking with stock exhaust on the 69.....maybe they can get that right. I hope Corvette Central stock exhausts will work.
We can send people to the moon with slide rulers......but these manufacturers cannot bend a set of pipes to fit on a production car. Total BS.
And those Flat spots on the OP pipes are absolutely unnecessary......I would be on the phone with them ASAP and they can pay shipping back.....BS.
And they were not there before......I have a 2015 Pypes X-Pipe and it does not have flats smashed in it.......whether this is an issue is directly related to how much flow you need.....
At 400hp.....I would say you are ok....at 500 hp...no.
And as far as Pypes goes.....they are ******** to deal with......always have been since they were small in the 2000's.....but the Street Flo muffler is one of the best sounding mufflers I have ever heard.....and high quality.....
Received the answer from Pypes.
They confirmed it was for E-Brake clearance.
Not sure how this affect performance and sound but I managed to install everithing with a bit of work.
It will have to do for now. Worst case, I will get the flatten section replaced by 2.5 round down te road at a shop or replace the whole X.
I have had the Pypes exhaust with crossover pipe for years and it installed easily without modification. I noticed an increase in performance immediately too. Beats the heck out of the original choked exhaust!!
If flattened sections do not affect performance.....then what is all the hype and COST with mandrel bent exhaust?? Reminds me of the Engine Master episode where they dented the **** out of headers.....and nothing changed. No performance loss. All of this further reinforces my long standing opinion that much of this "performance" stuff is marketing BS.....and at best, has no obvious measurable benefit on a street car. On a race track...competing with other people who have good flowing exhaust...max performance....it makes a difference. On the street......I think much of it is immeasurable and just nonsense. I succumbed to it many times....we do what we do becasue we like to feel like we are doing something....but in the end....nonsense. Its all part of the hobby....even if we are just fooling ourselves.
To the OP.....I am not buying Pype's story......I have 2-1/2 inch mandrel bent pipes coming out of the crossmember holes....and my E brake cables clear them just fine....no flat spots.

The only problem installing the Pypes 2.5" system with Dougs full length on my 72 was the mufflers had to be installed at about a 30* angle. They hit the body if we tried to mount them like the originals(90*) Paralell to the ground
