Having a 1968 427 Corvette for the past 35 years I too have searched for the perfect sound of a performance exhaust system. I found my solution at Corvettes@Carlisle where I met Allen's Stainless Exhaust Systems. They sold me a Chambered Exhaust for the C3 and it is great! I liked it so much that I bought a second system for my C4 as well.

The sound is like that of side-pipes and it is a deep throaty roar that exits behind you. The exhaust systems I bought were made of the Aluminized Steel and are both still on the car 30+ years after they were installed. My BB exhaust will set off car alarms all over the place just from the deep bass, pulsing sound. It is quiet enough to listen to the stereo inside the car while cruising don the road. All of the engine's music is following behind you.

If you want a performance exhaust then check out the suppliers that offer a Chambered Exhaust Systems. Allen's Stainless is no more after the passing of the owner. The chambered exhaust systems are still out there. I have long tube headers on my C3 and they were easy to fit together.

The Chambered exhaust systems go underneath the car and allow you to keep your spare (if you want to). The sound muffling comes from little baffles on the inside of the exhaust pipe so there are NO Bulky mufflers out back.
