No collector back system systems. All will need custom pipes from the collector to the section where it passes though the frame.
Too many variations from the different header manufacture.

This is true. You will need some custom exhaust work on the pipes that attach to the collectors.
Any quality muffler shop. The best option is a different transmission cross member that is made for a straight back pass under three inch full length. With some kind of H or X pipe cross over. Then what ever 3 inch in and out diameter mufflers out back.
I have 3.5 inch in and out mufflers for the least amount of back pressure to 4 inch chrome straight back tips off mufflers.
Depending on your 427 engine build, 2.5 inch for stock or mildly built or 3.0 inch for any big horsepower and torque build.
An H or X pipe will improve scavenging and slightly improve bottom end performance, however it will change the exhaust tone to a more exotic car sound, and you may loose some of the old school true dual exhaust tone you may prefer.
Buy good flow through mufflers like Magnflow for the deep tone and better performance.
Stay away from the raspy, tinny chambered mufflers that are common for droning.
Hey OP, where do you live. Long shot, but if you're anywhere near the SLC area I have a setup I took off of our '68 L71 that I'll give to you. Magnaflows, great pipes and tips. I cut them off at the downpipes. If you aren't near (likely), I do recommend Magnaflows - the thing sounded great with them. I changed mine out for the CC N11 - fit like a glove, ezpz, but it's a system for stock manifolds. Best, Paul
My 4 inch chrome tips. going straight back it probably adds a mile or two to the top speed. Oh this exhaust system does get rid of the worthless spare and carrier weight.
I had this system built by a shop that specializes in custom systems in vintage cars. Well known in the San Diego area. Not cheap.
I went with the Borla S-Type, Their ATAKs are a little too much for me and the cul de sac I live in.
An exhaust system reminds you of how much you invested in it EVERY TIME you fire up the engine. You therefore want to avoid skimping on it. Magnaflows are good too. My only suggestion is Don't be cheap.

I too am exploring exhaust systems. At the moment, I need to replace mufflers and wondered how loud N11 is relative to Magnaflow.
However, it is also tempting to replace the whole system, headers included as the prior owner connected the AIR pump with welded tubes to the topside of the headers. Hard to tell if current headers are Hooker Super Comps, but bends look like the 1 7/8" models. For Hooker Super Comps, can installation be done with engine in car? Do they get installed from the bottom or top?

For the SBC, from the underside was the only way for the ceramic Blackjack headers to go in my '73, including a dimple in the #4 tube to clear the Idler Arm bolt.
Throw away power or accept a noise level that is "open" exhaust loud is an unnecessary trade off. With an under car system you can get both an acceptable sound and keep the power you've built into an engine. Insert mufflers are the absolute worst when it comes to killing torque and horse power. The great irony of side pipes: They look 'racy" but they are the exact opposite on street cars that can't run wide open exhaust without deafening you and collecting tickets.
Pypes supposedly makes a collector back setup but heard it isn't worth the trouble.......

They do an inexplicable accommodation for the e brake cable. Hard to overstate how crazy it is. Pypes mandrel bends their 2.5 inch tubes yet effectively destroys flow with a notch cut into the tubes for e brake cable clearance. When you see it....... it's more than just a head scratcher. It's more of a, "This is as serious contender for stupidest thing I've ever seen!".
