I took some pictures today of the CVR starter Jebby refers to, and the one AJRothm suggested. You can see the differences here. One thing AJ mentioned that I did not previously post is that the mini starters that do not have a snout may have a problem in extending far enough to fully engage the flywheel teeth,...in fact, some information suggests it only engages about half the depth of the teeth. I took the pictures below and pulled the starter teeth out as far as I could on both......and IF the mini starter pushes the teeth aft as when actuated by the solenoid.....it looks to me that it goes back as far as the one with the snout.....IF it does go that far back. You can also see that the one with the snout has more of an angle cut to the face of the starter gears. Not sure any of this is helpful....or proves anything. I like the one with the snout simply because it seems that it would better ensure the starter gear is properly supported and engages the flywheel teeth better......especially as the starter is used alot and wears. The typical unsupported mini starter SEEMS like it could have issues over time given the gear just free floats out into space....but it really is just theory. I know that the CVR mini starter in the picture tore up some teeth and did some grinding a few times on my previous flywheel and is why I chose the one with the snout. I will be putting the CVR starter up for sale on the Parts for Sale forum. It is a functioniong starter.
