by loosening the lock nut you can turn the entire valve unit to lengthen or shorten

My thanks to all of you who have contributed thoughts and ideas here. Unfortunately, nothing has worked, and I can only conclude that the control valve is bad, so I'll be sending it back for replacement.

That's a good thread, a lot of info there. It has inspired me to take another shot at my original PSCV, which I believe it the right thing to do, so today I removed and returned the bad valve. My problem now is that my personal schedule won't allow me to get back to this until about mid-May, but I'll be in a better state of mind about it by then.
