Default Heater core

I was pulling my old carpet out to replace and passenger side padding under carpet was wet,so assuming heater core, but remembered last year when I replaced the heads, intake and carburetor and have only driven it about 20 miles since then, which was 5 months ago,but I never hooked up the heater hose to the intake, because it would be in the way of fuel line,so curious if I didn’t hook the hose to the intake, how is it my carpets wet,am I missing something,do I need to connect the hose to intake,or is it possible it’s from po from over a year ago,the car has been garaged the whole time,so I guess it could stay wet along time under the carpet. Thanks

There are usually 2 hoses that go to the heater core, what is the other hose doing, is it hooked up? And does the dampness smell like antifreeze?

No,I didn’t hook up either hose to the intake or water pump,so it has to be previous owner.
