Dude thanks. I was not having my alternator align properly and it turns out I wasn't just being a dumbass....I was installing everything correctly......but I don't have the correct pulley on the alternator!
When done rebuilding my 427 I ordered a nice new set of brackets and pulleys from Paragon and they were still not entirely quiet. I was so tired of having to play with adjusting the belts and not being able to access the power steering fluid cap. Having the standard belts on the front of the 427 did not leave a lot of room for much else.
Is it my eyes or do others see in the pictures above that the alternator appears to be about 1/8th" to far forward. Being just a little off can make a huge difference in the longevity of the V-belt. I even roughened up the smooth surface inside the pulley where the belt was supposed to get a grip.
One painful lesson learned was that the Early 1968 C3's with a 427 had a recall where GM changed the size of the water pump pulley to speed up the water pump and solve the overheating that had been going on. When I ordered the parts from Paragon I was not aware of this so I ended up having to replace a virtually new pulley. I am running high compression and that difference in water pump speed made a difference.
After months of playing with the system I finally yanked it all off and installed a March Serpentine Pulley Kit which frees up a lot of room and doesn't squeal like the old belts. The serpentine belt system is a great update and frees up room for the electric fans. In the storage compartment I keep a spare belt as it only requires one and is very easy to change.
