350 Bogs Down on Acceleration
I just finished replacing the valve cover gaskets on my, original to the car, 350 small block with the original quadrajet. I used Fel-Pro non-cork gaskets. After I was done, it fired right up and idled great.
Yesterday, I took it for a long ride. Again, it fired right up and ran great. About 15 miles into the ride, I stopped for coffee and when I attempted to back out of the parking space, it stalled. It fired right up, I put it into reverse and it stalled again.
From then on, whenever I had to stop ie red light or stop and go traffic, it wanted to stall when I hit the accelerator.
I meticulously documented, with pictures, the disassembly so that everything went back where it belonged.
I didn’t adjust the carb in any way. I did have to replace the carb choke heater connector because I broke the old one but I can’t imagine that that would have anything to do with the problem.
I can’t understand why the problem started so far into the drive, I would think that it would have started as soon as I started the drive if I had made a mistake putting it back together.
Any and all suggestions of where I can look for the problem(s) are appreciated.
Also, any recommendations for mechanics who can work on these engines in the southern New Hampshire/ northern Massachusetts area would be appreciated.
It’s a 1981 L81 that’s all stock with the exception of the exhaust system.
Thank you for reading my post.
- Did you gas up recently? (contaminated new fuel or stale old fuel)
- Was the car in storage until this drive? (stale old fuel or sediment sucked into the filter)
The fuel filter was replaced Nov 2019. I just ordered another one and will install that as soon as it gets here.
Thanks for the suggestion.

carb is ecu controlled.
there are a lot of wires and hoses over pass side valve cover.
egr stuck?
pics will help
There is no check engine light on.
I’m not sure if the carb is ECU controlled, it’s a stock QJet.
Now, about the EGR, is it highly sensitive? I did have to remove it to get the passenger side cover off and while it was off, I cleaned, taped and painted it. I did try to remove some of the soot from the underside.
It looked like it could be original.
I tried to route the hoses to the way they were when I disconnected them. Is the concern that they may be too close to heat?
All of the pics are from the passenger side.
if egr is hung open then it will stall eng at idle.
egr gets vacuum from tvs valve, heat allows vacuum.
these cars run well but systems need to be in good shape.
factory service manual is essential.
