Default Is this broken?

The speedometer in my 78 w/cruise is not working. I first checked the cable from the cruise transducer to the dash. Spun it with a drill and it seems to work fine. Next I pulled the gear of the trans and it looks perfect. Same with the mating gear inside the trans. Then I unscrewed the lower cable on the cruise control end. I didn't seem to be connected to this red plastic piece. Does this part look correct and is it supposed to be attached to the cable? When I view replacement cables online I don't see anything that looks like this! There seems to only be 1/4" or so of flat on the cable. I can force it on and it seems to spin ok by hand but not much engagement. The cruise transducer seems to spin fine by hand so not planning to open it up.

I believe that is broken the end should be square so it can drive the cable to the transducer.

Without a doubt that cable is broken. The red plastic cable tip is glued to the spiral cable. To repair it you need this speedo cable repair kit. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/ado-88960343

Red part broken off cable and twisted. You will most likely get a cut to fit cable and the plastic piece. When cable is cut to right size, you heat the end and it melts the adhesive in the new plastic piece so you can press it on. You could probably even use the old cable.

I would be more concerned about what twisted that, then broke it, that looks like some major binding. In my case, after 2 cables and unable to find anything binding, I looked inside the tail shaft at the speedo Drive gear. The retaining clip had allowed the gear to slip out of position. I put it back, and it did it again on a test drive. New clip fixed it.
