The speedo started to bounce on my 74. The bouncing is accompanied by a click. I put a new 70" speedo cable in which was surprisingly easy. Still doung it. Took it off the back of the transmission again and spun the cable with my drill. Still bouncing and clicking. So the issue is in the speedo head
Oddly, just before this started, the mileage went from 43,999 to 54k not 44k. And I noticed after the bouncing started, the odometer stopped working.
So next up is removing the speedo head and seeing if it's repairable. Hopefully nothing is broken and it just needs to be cleaned and lubed.....trying to think optimistically...lol

Mine did the same thing. I had to replace a gear in the speedometer, clean and lube the gears so the trip odometer moves freely. I think the trip odometer getting hard to turn causes the gears to strip out.
I would try lubing the cable befor tearing my dash apart.
There was a recent posting here on this problem. I've used wheel bearing grease on the bottom 1/2 of the cable in the past, but Lars posted a link to actual cable lube that, I think, was oil/graphite based, which may be better.

It's definitely in the speedo speedo. while i have the cluster out, itll give me the opportunity to polish the lenses and replace all the 50 year old bulbs
