The CC460 cols should lower your front about 1.0" from where you are now, but it depends a lot on which coils you have in there now.[/QUOTE]
Leigh, I was messing around with the spreadsheet you sent me. Do I add my weight into the fudge factor of the car? Also my car is a 4 speed, so It might be a little bit lighter than the specified weight.

I was playing around with it too.

80, 4spd, ac, ps, pb right?
I would use -80# for the al heads & intake
255-60 tires?
With those #s
the 460 should make you a little high like 28.1"
- 1/2 coil should get you near normal 27.7"
-3/4 coil 27.2"
-1.0 coil 26.7"

I have seen answers vary 1/4 to 1/2" with this, so I would go conservative on the 1st cut.
so depending on where your rear ride height is,
maybe cut 1/2 or 3/4 coil?

Since you have no idea how messed up your current coils are, you could just put them in as-is, and measure, and then one cut would get you there.

Hey I don't promise perfection with this, but it is a lot better than guessing.
Let me know your results once you get them in OK?

I think you might be right, I was thinking of cutting .625" from the top spring. Hopefully get 1.10-1.25" lower.

Yes I am approximating about 60-70lbs less from front end due to cast iron stuff that was replaced with aluminum. The tires are BFG 255/60/15. Yes it has A/C,PS,PB, 4spd.

Thanks Jim.
I built it for "us"
I verified it against a dozen forum members spring changes, and the data they provided.
I kept at it with the math until all of them came out real close.
It took a while.
I just hope people appreciate it and it helps someone.

Okay got my coils in from Tflght, and wouldn't you know it they were MOOG 5758 springs, with a Tpflght sticker. Am I gong to have to cut these? Have you ever done the 5758s.

Those two springs are almost identical.
The 5758s may run 0.20" lower.
Same coil cut predictions I had before.

Okay the weather here in S. Texas is a little crappy(lots of drizzle) for next couple of days. I will see if I can work on the car next weekend. I am tempted just to put in these 13" #460 springs (MOOG 5758) and see just how high the gap is going to be. However, my gut is telling me to cut at least .5" from the top already. Will see how daring I feel that day.

Not to nitpick but, the Moog springs are actually 474 lbs. The Moogs are what are on my car now. And going by MY previous experience with front coil springs and your C3, with the exception of A/C is pretty much the same as mine, highly recommend cutting at least a 1/2 coil before installing. Actually, I'm leaning towards 3/4 coil cut to account for the A/C.

Yep. I used both Interpon and Sunflowers results to help build & verify my spreadsheet. And for your car I highly recommend 1/2 coil or even 3/4 coil cut, depending on how low you want to go.
(Cut by coil, not inches). See post 23.

Okay guys looking at these coils, which side would you think to be the top?

This side has some indents in it, like where the machine that made them grabbed it.

If the coils were tighter at one end that would be the top side, but yours look evenly spaced so either end will do. Be sure to locate the coil end between the two small holes at the top for correct "clocking" of the spring.

A little bit of an update. I haven't finished yet because I ran into a caliper that was leaking so I ordered some replacement parts.

Found this little wire spool and put some degree marks on it. Zero is the beginning of the coil.

After getting info from several people here on this tread, I decided to cut a little past the 180 mark and not to the 3/4 point. So the first red line after the 180 mark.

Originally this spring was 13". After the cut it came down to approximately 12.65"

The overall thickness of the new spring measured the following.

The Original spring that came out of the car was about 15.25".

The thickness of the old spring was about .60

I also noticed why people want to index spring from the bottom. It seems there is a slot on the bottom where the spring drops.

The top part has one as well. Well after cutting the top part of the new coil, the top part of the spring was indexed properly but the bottom extended a little past the drop point. This was going to happen regardless of whether I cut it or not. For this not to happen, I would have to have cut the bottom one as well, but then it would have dropped more.

Later this week after I bleed all the brakes, I will get you the overall height of fender and the clearance between front tire to fender.

Fyi, new springs went on very easily. I just didn't want to put the tires on just yet until I lifted rear of the car and bled the rear calipers.

I think it is pretty obvious that the top pic is the top......it is flatter and tighter to the coil.

Also...the uncompressed length of a coil spring doesn't mean a thing here.......50 years of manufacturing difference, materials.....machine process could have a spring that is much longer or shorter out of the box.....it is when compressed is what matters....what it does under weight.....

Here's a thread of mine from earlier in the year with pics which show the before and after cutting a set of Moog 5758s. Really like the height now after cutting just under 3/4 coil.

Maybe this will help.. https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...conundrum.html
