i have a 1970 vette 350/350 4 speed m20 muncie i had a problem with 1st and 2nd gear lever with a lot of slop , 3rd and 4th gear lever rotates real crisp i removed the side cover to see a lot of wear on the 1st gear fork. its worn on the inside circle area of the fork my question is what is the cause of this and can i just replace the fork or do i need a total rebuild i dont know the history of this car just picked it up
Post up a pic of your gears. I dont think it would need a total rebuild but maybe a freshing up. Look at your 1 and 2 slider. All these parts are readily available on Ebay. Buy this book on Ebay. Its a great book.

If its not popping out of ear when ou let off the gas then no you do not need new gears. Those move the sliders that holds the synchros and yes you can buy new ones. IF you go to Paul Cangialosi's youtube videos you can find the answers to your questions...and you can learn how to rebuild the whole thing if you want https://www.youtube.com/@GearBoxVideo/playlists
If you think that its that shift fork then here they are..https://www.5speeds.com/cart/index.p...&product_id=77 Have you investigated and wear in your linkage or shifter. If the bushings are worn where the rods are attach or the rods are notched if they have no bushings then they would give you the same symptoms

Looking at your pics that part of the fork isnt supposed to contact the slider. Just those two raised tabs at the end of the forks move the slider. Either your sliders arent installed correctly or they have issues but again they just go front to back so check everything that moves them. Post pics of the inside of our transmission and the linkage and the outside of the housing that holds all that stuff together
After having the car in reverse the shifter and trans would go into neutral postion but the lever on 1st gear on the transmission wouldnt lock into the center notch (neutral) so i would have to get under the car slide the shift lever to the neutral position to be able to put in first gear. With the shifter rods disconnected there was not a good click like lock in like you hear normally hear when you take the lever by hand and move from 1st to 2nd with shifter rod disconnected

Thats a shifter issue. The transmission doesnt know anything besides where the forks put the synchros for each gear. Y9ou need to rebuild the shifter as sthe bushings maybe worn or the shift rods themselves are bad. Is it the stock shifter or a Hurst

You can buy all the parts to rebuild the stock one or buy a Hurst. You need to buy the shifter, the mounting kit and shift rods probably if they dont come withvthe mounting kit. You may get them from Holley who owns Hurst, Summit Racing with free shipping or one ofvthe corvette supply houses. Shop around they are expensive
You should measure the fork and groove to see how much wear is there. If the slider is worn you may not get all the play out.
The stock shifters are longer throw than an old school Hurst that mounts on the Tail housing vs the cross member.
