Default Tire fitment

Hello, I'm currently running stock wheels and tires. 255 60 15's. I wondering if it is possible to fit a bigger (fatter) tire without any body mods? If so, what is the largest tire that will fit? TIA.

If your 79 came with that optional size your inner fenders are already cut..

I run a pair of 275/60-15 rear tires on my 75. No "body" mods, but I did zip off the parking brake bracket from the side of the trailing arm and weld it up on top of the arm. Minimally invasive. Takes about 15 mins per side. You need to do this because of the geometry of the tire - The middle of the sidewall bulges out and the parking cable will rub on the sidewall until you change its routing via the bracket relocation.
