Default Ticking

Upon start up, I have a ticking/tapping sound. After about a minute or two, it goes away. It sounds like the passenger side. Engine has about 6,000 miles on it. I've heard listen to the valve covers with a screwdriver, bad lifter, rocker arm adjustment or heat riser. Wanted to ask you corvette forum guys. What are your thoughts or experiences with this? Thanks in advance.

Wanted to take this pic also where heat riser is.

My thought: It is a lot easier to hear a sound in a YouTube video than it is to guess the cause of a sound based on a description.

Is your heat riser connected and functional? Even some photos would help.

Honestly I dont even know if it is connected. Never even knew that was a thing. I'm not that much of a mechanic. I will have to locate it later tonight after work.

Hopefully you dont have a cam lob starting to fail. You could also remove the valve covers and look for a loose rocker arm. you will want to rotate the engine either by hand or with the starter and the distributor power wire disconnected and check the arms at multiple points in their travel.
You might just have a sticking lifter as well.

Wouldn't it tick all the time if a rocker arm is loose?

I dont necessarily think so if it was slightly loose things expand when they heat up effecting tolerances. Its more likely a sticking lifter though.

Looking forward to photos and/or video. Please take off the air filter assembly to give us a clear view.

If a TVS is closing/opening and changing the heat riser position, that should be really easy to see.

So it sticks at first then loosens up? Can that damage the engine?

No much to go on, the engine was rebuilt 6K ago? Is it still flat tappet, if so what kind of oil are you using? Get a length of garden hose or similar, using it like a stethoscope try to find where its coming from. Could be a lot of things, exhaust manifold leak causes a tick like sound, or valve train issue, you first need to know where it is coming from before speculating...

Thermo Vacuum Switch.

I'll hold off on speculation until we see some pictures, and a confirmation of year, engine, etc.

thats good new that its a roller as it makes a wiped lobe unlikely.

I ad a jeep and a honda ridgeline that would tick on startup for a couple minutes until things warmed up enough to where it stopped in both cases I read the 2 engine were prone to it if the valve clearance adjustments needed to be redone in that case due to high miles or a lifter was sticking. I'm not saying thats whats happening here but it sounds like a good possibility. Especially since it was just assembled 6k ago. it could also be something else entirely like an exhaust manifold leak thats sealing itself up as it expands. I had a 360 in my old ram that did this with the drivers side header.

Okay. Thanks for your input. I will check for exhaust leak tonight.
