Engine mounts are in. Idler arm down. Oil pan off/cleaned/painted. Cam out. Front of engine cleaned/painted. Going to scrape the OEM oil pan gasket tomorrow morning and get to putting it back together.

The timing chain was tight - no slop. Really starting to believe the motor was babied. Cam lobes look brand new, journals are smooth and shiny. Lifters were pretty much perfect. With 52K miles on this car, I am happily surprised.

I went through the motor mount wringer last month with my '68. I pulled the 327 out last October, rebuilt it and slapped new mounts on it before putting it back in, upon install, I was a full inch shy of installing the long bolts, I had discarded the old mounts so I had nothing to compare to. When I pulled the engine, the long bolts came right out, no drama or bs. I wound up making 1/2" thick shim plates to put between the block and the mount, but then the funny thing was that the engine was tilted, the right side of the engine was low, a lot low, like how is this possible kind of low. I wound up putting both shim plates under the right side mount and the motor is now level and happy. But I'm left scratching my head. If I didn't know better, I'd swear the car had been hit and the frame got bent, except it was sitting in my garage without an engine.

Yep. My 68 is oddballish like that also. I suspect it got hit hard sometime before I got it. I also had to tweak & twist and push & pull..... Not a whole inch on mine but maybe 3/8" to 1/2".... and mine is level....but yeah.... definitely tweaked.....so I ground on the motor mount and inserted some washers/shims for the horizontal bolt spacing....and mine looks fairly straight across the front of the engine.....so kinda odd.
