Default What’s this? Tranny 400 to 700

Not hooked up but on the tranny.

Where does it get connected/wired in?

It's the wiring for the torque converter lockup. But there should be three wires not one and not red either. Being that connector on the transmission looks kind of newish, somebody did some finagling. Regardless you going to have to drop the pan and see how it's wired inside. There's a good chance and I'm only guessing there was a normally open switch installed in the fourth gear pressure port and that red wire goes to 12 volts. Normally the 82 CFI has two normally closed pressure switches in the 4th and 3rd gear pressure port. What I'm seeing here will not work with the CFI's ECM. What I had in my 700r4 was TransGo 700LU kit which locked up the converter without any electrical and is what I would recommend. It works very well but only works with earlier valve bodies that are bored for it. From the 82 factory service manual:

Thank you for confirming.

I know that there was an upgrade to petronix as well.

Would that change anything?

Sorry for not knowing more, but things were done without my knowledge and I cannot ask for clarification.

It may, do have the CFI system or has it been changed to to something else?

On further inspection:

apparently my newly rebuilt (numbers matching) transmission was removed; and there is a 700 in its place.

Is this a torque converter to the brake?

Also now on a search for my original transmission that I did NOT realize till now has gone missing!

Your profile says you have a 68, so to prevent posters from thinking you have a 82 CFI, what year car and what engine?

Yes assumed she had an 82. I took a look at her profile and she has 68 427 BBC.

I agree with that. I would prefer to use a 400 behind a big block too. A Tremec TKX even better!

Sorry for the confusion.

Until I started investigating this part, I did not realize that my transmission had been switched out. 🙄

My 68 had the newly rebuilt 400 on the 427 big block when it went to DUB’s shop for paint/body/interior installation. Thankfully checked engine numbers soon still have my original newly rebuilt engine. 😵‍💫

I just started a new thread and off-topic to help explain what I am dealing with: modifications were made without being advised and without my approval.

It’s now apparent I have 700 in my car and still trying to go through and see what else has been removed and changed. Not even sure why this was done unless my parts were used on someone else’s car. Things I won’t ever likely get the answers to.

My car was numbers matching.

The original transmission would have been a 3 speed. The 700R4 is a 4 speed. What did the transmission gear indicators on the shifter look like originally? P,R,N,D,2,1 or something else? Do they look different now?

Any chance you can count the number of bolts on the transmission pan? The original transmission would have 13 bolts. The 700R4 uses 16 bolts.

That’s what we discovered last night. It’s the 700.

What about the shifter? Is it D,2,1 or something else?

I have no idea. Will have to take picture when I get home.

Just a girl that paid to have shops do work on my car and the last shop did random changes (for reasons I will never be able to answer) and now that he has passed away, I have an incomplete car, missing parts and no way to ask WTH his plan or process was. 😖

What could I take a picture of to give you that information?

I’ll take a picture this evening when I get home from work.

That’s the problem is so many things have been changed, removed etc and we don’t have a clue what we are looking at.

With not knowing what mods have been done it’s a nightmare. Not like we can just reference the AIM.

Where is the console with the shift indicator? Guess it doesn't matter at this point since you confirmed the pan has 16 bolts.

Take a picture of the shifter assembly from the side. Just to check if it has been modified for the capability of selecting all 4 forward gears. You can see how I modified mine here so I could select 1st gear: https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...post1604916531
