I put a set of these on my "68" this weekend and I swear there is about 2" of clearance beneath the car now. :eek:I don't believe I can get it over the railroad tracks near my house! Is this normal? Anyone else have these headers on your car and experience the same? Please help!!!
I had set of headers (I believe they were Hedmanns) prior to me frame off (now I have Stahls with no problems) and I had to cut the primaries and shorten them few inches to get better cround clearence...
Aside from ground clearance, how did the install go? I am waiting for some warmer weather to put mine on. Could happen any weekend now... Ground clearance is a concern. I checked out some vettes with headers at a car show and noticed that ground clearance seemed to be a universal problem. I dont suppose there is enough room to experiment with spacers or double gaskets at the attachment points (heads?) to see if that gives you any additional clearance at the bottom.. MJ
I just rebuilt the front end (new bushings, tie rods, ball joints) last week.
The shocks and springs look fine. If my springs were worn, is there a way to measure them or tell without removing them? The car sets up straight and rides fine.
If I had my car available i'd get some measurements for you, unfortunatley it's in storage elsewhere, hopefully someone will chime in with some measurements.
Unforunately I have heard very bad things re hookers quality control now that they moved production to Mexico. Some don't even fit the car at all, while other fit perfectly.
Depending on where you bought them, they might exchange them for another set.
I have the hooker super comps and sidepipes and I have never had any clearance problems. The do reduce the amount of clearance you will have but I have never scraped them on anything. As a reference, my sidepipes are about and inch and half lower than my rocker panel. I just started to remove them tonight so I can have jet hot coat them. Anyone know how to seperate the pipe from the header?
Thanks to all for your input. MJ - the install was fairly routine. Did not have to undo motor mounts. Remove starter and plugs, then wrestle with headers for two hours! :D Drivers side is a little worse. They just simply are not going to work. :( I am going to remove them today. I don't want to mess with the ride highth because I like the car as it sets. Will sell them cheap if anyone is interested! :cuss :cry
That's too bad. My problem was I could not get the drivers side exhaust manifold out. If I have a ground clearance problem..... unless they are dragging on the ground I will at least make one trip to the dragstrip before taking them off!! :) MJ
Yeah, I am in the same boat! Don't know what to do now.
I'm going to put the stock manifolds back on and take a closer look at other options. These headers are ceramic coated and expensive so for now I'm out big bucks for nothing! :cuss
