I think I would use an Anti-seize" product. You have two dissimilar metals, iron & steel that could cause corrosion.
Much like steel sparkplugs in iron heads. A little dab on the threads.
Depends on the plug type. I use Dry seal plugs which don't usually require sealant; however, I do use what 69L88 noted.
If you use the high temp permatex thread sealant it will work very well. I used to use it. It will also act like a thread locker and require heat to remove. After 2 guys wrecked a new plug trying to remove it 500 miles later, I stopped using it for diff plugs. I do use it on steering boxes because I want a locking sealant for that application.

Strange Gary, according to the package it’s supposed to be averse to oil and removable, they actually recommend it for differential plugs. Not that Im doubting what you encountered! This is why hearing what others have experienced is great. Thanks!
I spoke with the tech at Permatex after the first one locked tight. They told me exactly what was on the label. Then the two guys wrecked the plugs in a few weeks. I just put it on your steering box nut threads and want it to be locked and sealed. I will never use it on a diff pipe plug again.

Thanks Gary, you’re a walking encyclopedia. I’m looking forward to getting it in an not have to open it for another 50 years!
