I have replaced them on the car with the engine in place. I made a wooden cradle to jack up the engine a few inches to replace the mount. Watch your fingers, the distributer and fan shroud. Jerry
Here is a run-down on proper motor & trans mounts:
Rubber front / rubber rear.
Solid front / rubber rear.
Solid front / solid rear
But NEVER rubber front / solid rear. (things will snap)
Not too bad a job. Really watch where you put your fingers if something slips. Maybe an extra wedge in case it does slip.
Loctite Blue on all the bolts.
You may want to go with the Moroso Solid mounts and never look back.

I've replaced a few motor mounts over the years.
I've had the engine bouncing against the hood.
Never had it cause a issue shifting however.
There Pretty easy to change, just jack one side of the engine at a time. Block of wood on the oil pan is all ya need.
If you start jacking on one side of the block, you better have the transmission mount loose.
The trans needs to be able to move also.
That's interesting, As I've never heard that before. And I'm not the new kid. Seems to me I've ripped out the drivers side mount about 4 times over the years. The first time I just replaced that one mount. Didn't even consider loosening the other engine mount or the RUBBER trans mount. Second time I thought it was a good idea to replace both motor mounts, just because. And once again I never even considered loosening the trans mount. The third time I once again just replaced the torn drivers side mount. Not loosening the other 2. I know, shame on me.
this last time. Oh about 7 or 8 years ago now, so I guess I'm about due again. Anyway, the last time I replaced all 3. Just because. And although my trans mount was 40 years old. My car is a manual that has had a hard life. That original mount actually still looked pretty good.
So, I'm thinking if your trans mount is solid, perhaps you might wish to loosen it up a tad.
But a rubber trans mount? Lifting one side of the engine about an inch or so at the motor mount is a very, very slight twist on that trans mount.
