Getting my 74 out of driveway detention the side mirrors are junk.
The mounting plate rubber screws have worn out the holes.
I'm thinking about drilling out the mounting plate holes so I can fit a larger dia rubber mounting bolts.
Any thoughts on this, everything else seems like too much time/money?

1974 used chrome mirrors and there is no rubber involved mounting the mirror to the body.
So exactly what mirrors are you using?
I had issues with my side view mirrors as well. The original mounting plates fail in one way or another. The replacements come with an expanding rubber anchor. I found that the rubber anchors don't hold the mirrors tight and they vibrate at higher speeds. When I tried to tighten them it pulled the rubber anchor through the hole. My solution was using a rivnut. It is a threaded pop rivet. I purchased a tool and a set of assorted sized nuts for around $80. Not cheap, but there are a couple of other places where I have or will use them to repair stripped holes in thin sheet metal or fiberglass: the small cover plate inside the door jam by the hinges, the rubber shift boot that mounts to the body under the center console.
After HD where I bought them before I gave up and used internet.
The design has improved, not sure about the sizing?
Found something that looks promising, bought one for trial fitting.
If it fits, it should be much stronger than original!
Hold on a sec....let me find the link where you can insert a stainless steel plate behind for support..... gimme a few....

If there is something I have learned over the years it is to ASK the Forum for solutions before I go off half-cocked! I think you'll like this.
The old mirror bracket was mounted w/skinny rubber expanding bolts.
Their hole is a sleeve/tube in the door about 3/8".
The skinny bolt in a much bigger sleeve was a disaster from the beginning!
The box stores had nothing, the internet doesn't allow trial fittings.
Spent $7 on Amazon for a trial rubber w/o bolt.
Finally went to Ace Hardware for Hardware. WTF
The OG hooked me up w/3/8" rubber expansion bolts using 1/4" tightening bolts.
Drilling out the sleeves w/15/32 drill took much longer than expected.
Grinding off the expansion bolts shoulder was too easy.
I touched up the mounting bracket a hair to allow for the bigger bolts. With a touch of WD40 and a mallet, they fit perfectly! OMG
I am overjoyed w/results.
