The "E20" is the body build date. It decodes as December (E) 20th of 1971. The car itself would have been built about the same time.

988. Steel Cities Gray. Love that color. So unique. I’ve owned a factory red 72 for 34 years, no way I’d change that color to red if it was me. But everyone can do what they want, and everyone has different preference when it come to color.

Bill, yes I assumed that it was painted before you bought it. Sorry, the post I presume implies like why did you change the color, and was not my intent. Can never go wrong with red it seems with older corvettes. More really about how scg is a 1 year color I believe and so unique was kind of what I was getting at.
