Default Old tire date code question

Does anyone know how to properly interpret this date code information? I found an old but never used goodyear speedway tire at my local swap meet last Saturday with the following code molded in: " ATNBL JD1". My only takeaway from all this is that is was likely made in 1971 with the 1 being the last character. Can anyone confirm this or shed any light on the meaning of the other letters?

The DOT code should be on the back of the tire for a pre 2000 tire. Is the code you posted from the back?

The code I posted is on both sides of the tire. In the first photo you can see it at top center near the "G" in goodyear.

Thank you PJO for the detailed breakdown. I do know how to read currently used date codes. It was the ancient history I was looking for and that's what you provided.

Post a photo...I suspect that's not the date code. You looking for the DOT either above or in front of the code data.

Here is link to article with photos with discussion of date codes

Here's two more photos showing the back of the tire. There is nothing under the "DOT" marking on the back. The molded in information that I originally posted is shown to the left and is identical to that which is shown on the front.

"DOT" marking with nothing under it from the back of the tire

There are also two identical red ink stamps on the back of the tire indicating where is was made and where it was sold. They read:
"GOODYEAR T&R CO. GADSDEN ALA - 5000", and "GOODYEAR SERV STORE, 901 MARKET ST N, CANTON OHIO"

The date Code after the DOT didn't start till sometime in 1971 which explains the format of the date code on your tire according to an article on the Coker Tire site.

My understanding is that until 1971 when the government mandated universal date codes from all manufacturers, each company had its own system. Your tire is prior to the standardization, so relies on GY's system. PJO above decoded it.

This PDF article, Goodyear Polyglas Tire Date Coding by Marcus Anghel and Rick Sauve, may provide some info for background on decoding.

This is an excellent summary of Good Year tire date code formulation in the 1970s...and as it evolved in the same decade. Nice work!

It is so hard to imagine what my C3 with it's 427 would have done to that size tire, that being the size my C3 BB came with from the factory. It might be worth a laugh or two to try a set of 4 of the older F-70-15 sized tires and see just how different our modern radials are.
