Got it! Upper timing gear. Now, the big question is whether or not this is just leftover debris from a long resolved issue or if there’s a minor disaster lurking beneath my timing cover. The engine ran fine a week ago so it’s hard to imagine my timing gear is completely smoked. I guess the only way to find out, for sure, is to take a look under the timing cover…unless someone has another suggestion. 🤔
If this is your gear I see all kinds of issues with it and would change it ASAP.

a lot of slop. The first indication of a stretch timing chain on a small block with big block Chevy is that the fuel pump side of the cover is usually got a bulge in it, and the paints gone usually means the timing chain was slapping up against the cover
You had mentioned you’re going to replace that motor or rebuild it. I recommend a 327, 350 hp camshaft from Chevrolet. I really wake that small block up for Street Croix with a good LT one intake manifold good combination for a strong speaker that I’ve done many times over in the past along with a little bit ahead work such as 194 intakes and set a 160 exhaust and I’m shredding the bowl area really wake that motor up

Not only that but cracks in the plastic gear, missing pieces etc.
This is a standard, maybe 5000 rpm, street engine.
As long as it has 15psi at hot idle, it does not need any more.
There is zero benefit, on a street engine, and it will cost some HP.
Now if the oil psi is already low, at idle, you have other issues anyway.

Replace that timing gear set ASAP with a nice double roller. I am seeing cracks and missing chunks already. That gear is on borrowed time right now.
